Lydia Jean Cardenas Dec. 19, 1940 – July 30, 2020 Lydia better known to everyone
as “Gina” was born on December 19, 1940 to Mike and Sarah Flores in Eagle Lake, TX.
Gina married Atilano Cardenas, Jr. on Jan. 2, 1955 in Eagle Lake. Atilano and Gina
were blessed with six children: Joseph Anthony, Michael Lewis, Daniel Lynn,
Carol Annette, Atilano, III and David Allen. Later they adopted a son, Mark Adrian Navarro. Gina was a great mom never leaving her children alone at home until they were able to
care for themselves. She then decided to start waitressing and later working to assist
the elderly doing home health. She suffered a stroke after moving to Columbus from
Eagle Lake. But thanks to a faithful servant, her father in law, Atilano Cardenas, Sr.
she walked out of the hospital three days later after doctors said it would take months
maybe years to walk and talk again. Gina was a true fighter even to the end. When the
children attended school she was always there to support them in all their activities.
Especially the ones that held a banquet at the end of the school year. She loved to eat.
Church was important to Gina so she made sure that all the children attended. Even if
they slept thru the service. Carol's greatest memory with her mom was being saved on
the same day and later baptized on the banks of the Colorado River in Altair. Gina's
greatest joys were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carol remembers
when she started working at KULM radio as a DJ Gina had a shirt made to let everyone
know how proud she was of her. As Gina got older her health began to fail more as well
as her memory. Gina would later be diagnosed with dementia. But even with dementia
she never forgot her favorite bible verse: “I will lift my eyes unto the hills, from whence
cometh my help. My help comes from the LORD who made heaven and earth.”
Psalm 121:1-2 She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Eva Olvera and
Mary Flores; son, Atilano III; and granddaughters, Elizabeth Ann and Rachel Yvonne
Cardenas. Gina leaves to cherish her memory: her husband; sons and daughters in law,
Anthony of New York, Michael and Daniel of Austin, David and wife, Stacy of Alleyton
and Mark and wife, Jasmine of Garwood; and daughter, Carol of Round Rock; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
